Thiruthani Murugan Temple: The Hill of Peace

Perched on the Thiruttani hills in the Tiruvallur district, just a short drive from Chennai, the Thiruthani Murugan Temple is the fifth of the Aarupadai Veedu. It represents a phase of supreme peace, calmness, and divine romance in Lord Murugan’s epic story.

The Legend of Divine Romance

After his grueling, six-day war against the demon Surapadman at Tiruchendur, Lord Murugan’s anger was still blazing. He came to the Thiruttani hill to cool his temper and find peace (Shanthi).

This hill is also the celebrated site where Lord Murugan wooed and married his second consort, Valli, who was raised by a tribal hunting chief. Because it is a site of pacification and love, the deity here is remarkably calm, and his iconic Vel (spear) is notably absent from his hand in the main sanctum.

Temple Architecture & Unique Features

To reach the main shrine, pilgrims must climb 365 steps, which vividly represent the 365 days of the year.

Another unique feature of Thiruthani is the Sandalwood Paste (Chandanam) applied to the deity. Unlike other temples where the paste is washed off quickly, here it is kept on the idol for extended periods. It is highly sought after by devotees, as it is believed to cure various ailments and diseases.

Practical Information for Pilgrims

  • Temple Timings: 5:45 AM to 9:00 PM.
  • Aadi Krithigai: This festival, occurring in July/August, is the crown jewel of Thiruthani. Over a million devotees gather, carrying spectacular Kavadis (elaborate wooden structures decorated with peacock feathers) up the 365 steps to the rhythmic beats of traditional drums.
