Palani Murugan Temple: The Hill Shrine of Dhandayuthapani

Perched atop the Sivagiri hill in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, the Palani Murugan Temple is one of the richest, most visited, and intensely revered shrines in South India. It is the third of the Aarupadai Veedu (Six Abodes of Lord Murugan), where he is worshipped as Dhandayuthapani Swamy, the Lord holding a staff.

The Legend of the Golden Mango

The origin of Palani is one of the most famous stories in Hindu mythology. Sage Narada once offered a divine “Fruit of Knowledge” to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They decided to give it to the son who could circle the world the fastest. While Lord Murugan set off on his peacock to physically fly around the globe, his brother, Lord Ganesha, simply walked around his parents, declaring them to be his entire world.

Ganesha won the fruit. Furious and feeling outsmarted, Lord Murugan renounced all his royal garments and ornaments. He came to the Palani hills as an ascetic, wearing only a loincloth and carrying a staff (dhanda), to meditate and find inner peace.

The Navapashanam Deity & Panchamirtham

The idol of Lord Murugan at Palani is completely unique. It was created by the great Siddhar (sage) Bhogar using an amalgam of nine poisonous herbs and minerals known as Navapashanam. When these nine poisons are mixed in exact proportions, they form a master medicine. Any substance that touches the idol absorbs its healing properties.

Because of this, the temple’s famous Panchamirtham (a sweet mixture of banana, jaggery, ghee, honey, and cardamom) is considered highly sacred and medicinal. It even has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag!
