The Legend of the Silver Hall: The Right-Legged Dance
The story behind the Velli Ambalam is a beautiful testament to the relationship between a devoted king and a compassionate God.
According to the Sthala Purana, the great Pandyan King, Rajashekara Pandiyan, was a master of 63 of the 64 traditional arts. The only art he had not mastered was Tandava (dance), out of deep reverence for Lord Nataraja. However, recognizing that a king should be a master of all arts to rule perfectly, he finally decided to learn.
As the King practiced, he experienced immense physical pain in his legs. Suddenly, he had a realization: If practicing for just a few hours causes me this much agony, how much pain must my Lord Nataraja be in, having danced on his left foot continuously for eternity?
Overwhelmed with emotion, the King went to the Silver Hall inside the temple. He drew his sword and threatened to behead himself right there unless Lord Shiva switched his footing to rest his tired left leg. Deeply moved by the King’s pure, empathetic devotion, Lord Shiva instantly switched his posture, planting his left foot down and raising his right leg. He promised to remain in this unique posture in Madurai forever to bless his devotees.

The Velli Ambalam is an architectural jewel tucked inside the massive Swami (Shiva) shrine precinct of the temple.
