Mahaganapati Temple Ranjangaon: The Eighth Ashtavinayaka

Located on the bustling Pune-Ahmednagar highway, the Mahaganapati Temple at Ranjangaon is the powerful eighth and final unique destination on the yatra. Lord Ganesha is worshipped here in his most supreme and fierce form, known as Mahaganapati, seated on a lotus with his consort, Riddhi and Siddhi, on either side.

The Legend of Tripurasura and Lord Shiva

The history of this shrine is uniquely intertwined with Lord Shiva. According to legend, the demon Tripurasura had built three invincible cities in the sky, causing havoc across the universe. Lord Shiva set out to destroy him but was initially unsuccessful. Realizing he had forgotten to invoke his son, Shiva prayed to Lord Ganesha here at Ranjangaon. Empowered by Ganesha’s blessings, Shiva successfully destroyed the three cities with a single arrow.

The Sun’s Alignment & Architecture

The temple’s massive architecture was largely constructed during the Peshwa era, specifically under Madhavrao Peshwa. The temple is perfectly oriented to the east so that during the Dakshinayan phase (when the sun moves southward), the rays of the rising sun fall directly upon the idol of Mahaganapati.
