Ballaleshwar Temple Pali: The Third Ashtavinayaka

Nestled between the historic Sarasgad Fort and the Amba River in the Raigad district, the Ballaleshwar Temple in Pali holds a completely unique distinction: it is the only incarnation of Lord Ganesha in the world known by the name of his devotee. This is the traditional third stop on the Ashtavinayaka yatra.

The Legend of Devotee Ballal

A young boy named Ballal was such a fervent devotee of Ganesha that he spent all his time in worship, ignoring everything else. Enraged by this, the village elders and Ballal’s own father beat the boy mercilessly and tied him to a tree in the forest, destroying his stone idol. Despite the agony, Ballal continued chanting. Pleased by this unbreakable devotion, Ganesha appeared, healed the boy, and agreed to reside there permanently under Ballal’s name.

Temple Architecture & The Sun’s Rays

The temple is brilliantly engineered. It contains two sanctums (an inner and an outer), and the idol is carved to resemble the shape of the mountain behind it. During the winter solstice, the architecture allows the rays of the rising sun to fall directly onto the idol of Lord Ballaleshwar.
