Suriyanar Kovil: The Primary Navagraha Temple of the Sun God

Located in the serene village of Thirumangalakkudi, just 15 km from Kumbakonam, Suriyanar Kovil is the epicenter of the Tamil Nadu Navagraha circuit. Dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun God), this 11th-century Chola marvel is incredibly rare—it is one of the few temples in India where the Sun God is the presiding deity, accompanied by his consorts Usha and Chhaya.

Even more uniquely, this temple houses individual shrines for all the other eight planetary deities (Grahas), all of whom are positioned facing Lord Surya.

The Legend & Significance

According to the Puranas, the sage Kalava Muni was suffering from severe leprosy. He intensely worshipped the Navagrahas, and pleased with his devotion, the planets cured him. However, Lord Brahma was furious that the planets had granted a boon (which only the Trimurti were authorized to do) and cursed all nine planets to suffer from leprosy themselves.

To rid themselves of the curse, the Navagrahas came to the Vellerukku forest (the current location of the temple), performed intense penance to Lord Shiva, and were cured. Lord Shiva then blessed the spot, declaring that any devotee who worships the Navagrahas here will be relieved of their planetary afflictions (Doshas).

Surya Dosha & Pariharam (Remedies)

In Vedic astrology, a weak or afflicted Sun in one’s horoscope (Surya Dosha) can lead to a lack of confidence, career stagnation, problems with government authorities, and health issues related to the eyes and heart.

  • The Best Day to Visit: Sunday (Bhanuvara) is the dedicated day for the Sun God. The temple experiences massive crowds on Sundays, especially during the Tamil month of Thai (mid-January to mid-February).
  • The Offerings: To appease Lord Surya, devotees offer red lotus flowers, wheat, and light lamps using ghee. The traditional vastram (cloth) offered to the deity is red.
  • Prasadam: Sweet Pongal made with wheat is the primary offering and prasadam here.

H2: The Strict Worshipping Protocol There is a highly specific, mandated order in which you must worship the deities at Suriyanar Kovil. You cannot just walk in and visit random shrines.

  1. First, pray at the Koltheertha Vinayagar (Ganesha) shrine to remove obstacles.
  2. Worship the presiding deity, Lord Surya.
  3. Visit the Guru (Jupiter) shrine.
  4. Worship Shani (Saturn), Budha (Mercury), Angaraka (Mars), Chandra (Moon), Ketu, and Shukra (Venus) in that exact order.
  5. Finally, worship Rahu and return to the Koltheertha Vinayagar shrine to conclude the darshan.
