Shri Moreshwar Temple, Morgaon : The First Ashtavinayaka

Located about 65 kilometers from Pune in the shape of a dancing peacock, the village of Morgaon is the spiritual epicenter of the Ganapatya sect. The Shri Moreshwar (or Mayureshwar) Temple is the mandatory first and last stop on the sacred Ashtavinayaka yatra. According to scripture, a pilgrim’s journey is only considered complete if they begin here, visit the other seven shrines, and return to Morgaon to seal their yatra.

The Legend of Mayureshwar

The temple’s history is rooted in the legend of the demon Sindhu, who was terrorizing the universe. In response to the prayers of the gods, Lord Ganesha incarnated as Mayureshwar, riding a magnificent peacock and wielding a spear, to defeat the demon. The name “Morgaon” literally translates to “Village of Peacocks.”

Unique Temple Architecture

From the outside, the Moreshwar Temple looks less like a traditional shrine and more like a miniature Islamic fortress, complete with four minaret-like pillars at its corners. This defensive architecture was built to protect the temple from attacks during the Bahmani Sultanate and Mughal periods.

One of the most unusual features of this Ganesha temple is the presence of a large Nandi (Lord Shiva’s bull) sitting directly facing the main sanctum. Legend states that the Nandi was being transported to a Shiva temple but decided to rest here and refused to move, dedicating himself to Lord Ganesha instead.

Yes. According to the Mudgala Purana, the traditional and scripturally accurate sequence begins at Morgaon, proceeds through the other seven temples, and must conclude with a final visit back to Morgaon.

While there is no strict, heavily enforced dress code like in some southern temples, traditional and modest Indian attire (Kurtas, dhotis, sarees, or salwar kameez) is highly recommended and respected.

It is highly challenging. The entire route covers roughly 650 kilometers. Most pilgrims take 2 to 3 days to complete the circuit comfortably without rushing the darshans.
