The Legend & History
The origins of the temple are steeped in fascinating mythology. According to legend, King Indradyumna was directed by Lord Vishnu in a dream to find a floating log in the ocean and carve deities from it. The divine architect, Vishwakarma, appeared as an old carpenter and agreed to carve the idols under one strict condition: he must not be disturbed until the work was finished.
Impapatient after hearing no sounds for days, the King opened the door. The carpenter instantly vanished, leaving the wooden idols of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra without complete arms or legs. To this day, the deities are worshipped in this unique, magnificent, and unfinished form.

- The Flag: The flag mounted on the top of the main dome always flutters in the opposite direction of the wind.
- The Nilachakra: The massive metal wheel at the very top of the temple looks exactly the same, no matter which direction you view it from.
- The Shadow: The main dome of the temple casts no shadow on the ground at any time of the day.
- The Rosaghara (Kitchen): It is the largest functioning kitchen in the world. Food is cooked in seven pots stacked on top of one another over firewood. Miraculously, the food in the topmost pot cooks first!

- The Rath Yatra: This grand chariot festival, held annually in June/July, draws millions of devotees. The deities are brought out of the temple and pulled on massive wooden chariots to the Gundicha Temple.
