Situated in Deoghar (literally “The Home of Gods”) in the state of Jharkhand, the Vaidyanath Temple, also known as Baidyanath, is a vibrant epicenter of faith. It is worshipped as a Kamna Linga, a shrine where Lord Shiva is believed to fulfill the deepest desires of his devotees.
The Legend & History
This Jyotirlinga is famously tied to Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. According to the epic Ramayana, Ravana performed severe penance to Lord Shiva, cutting off his ten heads one by one as an offering. Moved by this ultimate sacrifice, Shiva descended, cured Ravana’s wounds acting as a Vaidya (doctor), and granted him a boon.
Ravana asked to take the Jyotirlinga back to Lanka, but Shiva warned him that wherever he placed the Lingam on the ground, it would become permanently rooted. On his journey south, Ravana was tricked by the Gods into handing the Lingam to a disguised Lord Ganesha, who placed it on the ground at Deoghar. The Lingam was fixed to the earth forever.
Temple Architecture & Unique Features
The main temple is a towering, white-washed stone structure topped with a massive golden vessel (Panchsula) donated by the Maharaja of Giddhaur. The temple complex is massive, housing 21 other smaller shrines dedicated to different deities, including Goddess Parvati. Remarkably, the main Shiva temple and the Parvati temple are connected by red silken threads tied by devotees, symbolizing the divine union of Shiva and Shakti.
