The Legend & History
The legend of Trimbakeshwar is deeply tied to Sage Gautama. According to scripture, the sage accidentally caused the death of a cow. To repent for this sin, he performed severe penance, praying to Lord Shiva to bring the River Ganga down to his hermitage to purify him. Shiva was pleased and brought down the river, which became known as the Godavari. The Gods then requested Shiva to reside there, and he manifested as the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga.
Temple Architecture & Unique Features
Trimbakeshwar is entirely unique among all 12 Jyotirlingas. Instead of a traditional rising Lingam, the sanctum contains a depression in the floor holding three small thumb-sized lingas. These three pillars represent the Hindu Trinity: Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.
The temple itself is built of stunning black basalt stone. Commissioned by the third Peshwa, Balaji Baji Rao, in the 18th century, the intricate stone lattice work and the massive crowning spire (Shikhara) are awe-inspiring.
