Bhimashankar Temple: The Jyotirlinga in the Sahyadris

Nestled deep within the lush green Sahyadri Mountains of Maharashtra, the Bhimashankar Temple offers a pilgrimage that is equally spiritually rewarding and visually breathtaking. It is not only one of the 12 supreme Jyotirlingas but also the origin point of the sacred Bhima River.

The Legend & History

According to the Shiva Purana, a powerful demon named Bhima (the son of Kumbhakarna) lived in the dense forests of the Sahyadris. He terrorized sages and devotees until Lord Shiva himself descended to Earth. A massive cosmic battle ensued, and Shiva ultimately reduced the demon to ashes. At the request of the gods, Shiva manifested at that exact spot as a Jyotirlinga, taking the name Bhimashankar.

Temple Architecture & Unique Features

The temple is a magnificent blend of traditional Nagara architectural style and the indigenous Hemadpanthi style of Maharashtra. The current structure, characterized by its intricate stone carvings, was largely built in the 18th century by Nana Phadnavis, a prominent minister of the Maratha Empire.

Because the temple is situated inside the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, the journey here involves traveling through misty forests. If you are lucky, you might even spot the Indian Giant Squirrel (the state animal of Maharashtra) in the trees surrounding the temple complex!
