Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple Guide: History, Timings & Route

Deep within the dense Nallamala forests of Andhra Pradesh, on the flat top of the Srisailam hills, lies a temple of immense, dual power. The Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is an incredibly rare pilgrimage site: it serves simultaneously as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas of Goddess Parvati.

The Legend & History

Legend says that Lord Ganesha was married before his older brother, Lord Murugan. Upset by this, Murugan isolated himself on the Krauncha mountain. To pacify him, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati traveled to the Srisailam hills. Shiva assumed the form of Mallikarjuna (the Jyotirlinga), and Parvati took the form of Bhramaramba (the Shakti Peetha) to be near their son.

Temple Architecture & Unique Features

The massive temple complex looks like a fortress. The most unique aspect of Mallikarjuna is the absolute accessibility of the divine: unlike many ancient shrines, devotees of any caste or creed are allowed to step into the inner sanctum and personally touch the Jyotirlinga to perform Abhishekam.
