Gangotri Temple Guide: History, Timings & How to Reach

Standing amidst dense deodar and pine forests along the roaring Bhagirathi River, the Gangotri Temple marks the spiritual source of India’s most sacred river—the Ganga. As the second stop on the Char Dham circuit, it is a place of overwhelming natural beauty and deep spiritual resonance.

The Legend & History

The legend of Gangotri is the story of ultimate perseverance. King Bhagirath performed intense penance for centuries to bring the River Ganga down from the heavens to wash away the sins of his ancestors. However, the sheer force of the river would have destroyed the earth. Lord Shiva stepped in, catching the mighty river in his matted locks to soften her fall. The temple marks the place where the Goddess Ganga first touched the earth.

Temple Architecture & Unique Features

The temple is a beautiful, striking white structure built of white granite in the 18th century by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa. During the winter months when the region is buried in snow, the idol of the Goddess is moved to the nearby village of Mukhba, where her worship continues uninterrupted. Near the temple is a natural, submerged Shivalinga in the river, visible only during the winter months when the water level recedes.
