Yamunotri Temple Guide: Trek Route, Timings & History

Nestled in a narrow gorge close to the source of the Yamuna River, the Yamunotri Temple is traditionally the very first stop on the sacred Char Dham Yatra. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, this high-altitude shrine represents purity and the washing away of earthly fears.

The Legend & History

In Hindu mythology, Goddess Yamuna is the daughter of Surya (the Sun God) and the twin sister of Yama (the God of Death). It is believed that bathing in her sacred waters cleanses a pilgrim of all sins and protects them from a painful, untimely death. The original temple was built in the 19th century by the Maharani of Jaipur, though it has been rebuilt several times due to harsh weather and avalanches.

Temple Architecture & Unique Features

The temple sits at a breathtaking altitude of 3,291 meters (10,797 feet). The most unique feature of this freezing Himalayan shrine is the Surya Kund—a boiling thermal hot spring located right next to the freezing river. Pilgrims tie rice and potatoes in a muslin cloth and dip them into the boiling spring; this cooked food is then taken home as the holy Prasad.
